Treatment of diabetes has to be depending on Type of individualized. DM whether the patient has other active medical problems whether the patient has complications of diabetes. Age and body may index of patients at the time of diagnosis. Patients also have to be educated about medicine dose adjustment during days of sickness, management of hypoglycemia (low sugar level) at home before reaching hospital. Patients are also counseled for maintaining a balance between health and celebrations in patients with chronic diseases becomes quite challenging. Patients tend to be careless.

Many rituals involve fasting as well as maintaining balance between heath & celebrations in patients with chronic disease become more challenging.


Tasting times should not become testing time.


Celebration should not compromise good glycine control.


- Irregular meal pattern and unhealthy foods with high calories with high fats leads to post pretended hyperglycemia, ketoacidosis and metabolic complications.

-Abstinence of water and fluids may cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and hypotension. Dehydration may increase the tendency for thrombosis during fasting, which needs to be educated.


Patients need to be educated about timing of meals, selection of food items, healthy recipes.

The pre fast meal should compromise of “slow release” calories by including complex carbohydrate with low glycemic index, proteins & moderate amount of fats.


Some important tips:


  1. Monitor your blood sugar regularly while you are fasting
  2. Have low glycemic index foods such as whole cereals, pulses,vegetables,fruits.Avoid fried food items such as soya,potatoes,bakery products, cakes
  3. Break your fast if your blood glucose less than 70.
  4. If you miss medications or insulin, consult your diabetologist for does adjustment.
  5. Avoid excess tea /coffee, alcohol & smoking
